Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is leaving the directorate at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a batch of emails between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became widely known.

He remarked in an announcement that he was "thankful for the privilege to have participated, excited about the potential of the organization, and eagerly await tracking their development".

The former Harvard president, who once presided over the prestigious university, announced on recently that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his association with Epstein.

The freshly disclosed communications revealed that Summers exchanged messages with Epstein until the eve of Epstein's 2019 apprehension for suspected human trafficking of underage individuals.

In another announcement, the technology organization expressed it respected the economist's decision to depart.

"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the viewpoint he offered to the governing body," the company remarked.

Political Context

This news arrives after the entire Congress of the legislative branch decided on recently to endorse a legislation that would require the federal prosecutors to make public its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.

The legislation will then proceed to the administration of President Trump for signature. Trump has said he expects to approve the measure, after modifying his position on the issue following pressure from his followers.

A collection of financier-linked correspondence released by the House Oversight Committee days ago included numerous prominent individuals in the Epstein's past associates, without implying any illegal behavior by those figures.

The messages indicated that the professor and Epstein regularly had dinners together, with Epstein often attempting to introduce the official to prominent global figures.

After the messages were released with the wider community, the former official expressed he assumed "total ownership for my ill-advised choice to maintain communicating with Jeffrey Epstein".

He continued that he hoped "to reestablish faith and mend bonds with the people closest to me".
